Directorate General of Immigration Indonesia Implements Bridging Visa

Indonesia Implements Bridging Visa for Foreigners

The Directorate General of Immigration under the Ministry of Law and Human Rights has enacted a policy called the Transitional Stay Permit, also known as the Bridging Visa. This permit serves as a ‘bridge’ between the previous residency permit and acquiring a new one.

“With this, foreign nationals holding Visit Stay Permits applied through evisa.imigrasi.go.id can obtain Limited Stay Permits without having to leave Indonesian territory. Similarly, holders of Limited Stay Permits and Permanent Stay Permits that can no longer be extended can obtain a new permit without leaving Indonesian territory,” said Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim.

The implementation of the Transitional Stay Permit is regulated under Minister of Law and Human Rights Regulation (Permenkumham) Number 11 of 2024, which was enacted on April 1, 2024. The Transitional Stay Permit lasts for 60 days and is applicable only to foreign nationals already in Indonesia. This permit becomes invalid if the foreign national leaves Indonesian territory.

This permit can be utilized by foreign nationals who are seeking to change their status to a Limited Stay Permit. Foreign nationals holding the Transitional Stay Permit are not subject to overstaying if their application for a transitional permit is approved after the expiration of their previous residency permit.

Foreign nationals wishing to use the Transitional Stay Permit must submit their application through the evisa.imigrasi.go.id website and make the immigration fee payment no later than 3 (three) days before the expiration of their previous residency permit.

Silmy highlighted how the permit saves time, effort, and accommodation expenses by avoiding the need to leave Indonesia for a new visa.

“The implementation of the Transitional Stay Permit is an effort by the Directorate General of Immigration to create legal certainty for foreign nationals within Indonesian territory as well as to streamline services,” she concluded.
