The Directorate General of Immigration (Ditjen Imigrasi) of Indonesia has introduced a new design for the Indonesian passport. This design, incorporating the national colors red and white, was unveiled during Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day celebration on August 17, 2024. The event took place at Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, Jakarta, where Minister of Law and Human Rights, Yasonna H. Laoly, commended the positive changes in the Directorate’s efforts, particularly highlighting the new passport design as a symbol of Indonesian culture.
Minister Laoly stated, “This new passport design not only serves as our identity abroad but also as a cultural ambassador, showcasing Indonesia’s uniqueness.”
Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim, emphasized that the new design goes beyond changing the cover color. It adheres to international standards from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 9 on Facilitation. The regulations require countries to periodically update passport security features to prevent fraud and counterfeiting.

Karim also noted that the new passport is specifically for e-passports and includes enhanced materials and security features. These updates ensure the document is resistant to forgery and unauthorized alterations, particularly on the biodata page.
The passport includes several advanced security features. These include a durable, flexible cover to protect the chip, a biodata page made of polycarbonate layers with a protective coating, and security-sensitive paper. The ink used includes both visible and invisible types that glow under UV light. The stitching thread of the passport book is also made with special ink.

The pages of the new passport are decorated with traditional fabric motifs from various Indonesian regions. These motifs change shape when exposed to UV light, adding an extra layer of security.
This new passport design aims to strengthen the Indonesian passport’s security and ease the authentication process. Since 1945, the Indonesian passport has undergone several color changes, evolving to meet international standards and security needs.
The latest update, featuring a wastra theme with 33 traditional fabrics, celebrates Indonesia’s diverse culture. The enhanced security features and compliance with ICAO standards reflect Indonesia’s commitment to maintaining a secure and respected travel document.
According to Karim, a strong passport is defined by four key factors: robust security features, the issuing country’s security, the conduct of citizens abroad, and strong diplomatic relations.
This new design is a significant step forward for Indonesia, symbolizing progress and a commitment to excellence.
